          Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Bath for Rejuvenation

Detoxifying baths a few times a week for 20 – 40 minutes can be a small step in your sacred hydrotherapy room that can add vitality and rejuvenation to your life especially when you are feeling tense, exhausted or run down. This bath soak can help relieve joint and back pain, support urinary tract health as well as skin conditions like eczema and acne leaving you energized with smooth glowing skin.

The Integumentary System (your skin) is the biggest organ of our body it is important to take care of because it can absorb and  also expel pollution in our bodies.  A hot bath prepared with 1 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar and a 1 Cup of Dead Sea Salts will  draw toxins out through the skin and help jumpstart the body’s cleansing and detoxifying process. Also add about 1 Cup of dried Lavender and/or Chamomile Flowers to your bath in a sealed nut bag or cheese cloth for soothing and aromatherapy benefits.  Alternatively, you can also prepare a herbal infusion of the herbs by pouring 2 cups of hot water over them and steep for  about 30 minutes. Strain out the herbs and pour infusion into your bath full of warm water. If you have high blood pressure or  other health concerns about using Dead Sea Salts in your bath you may eliminate the Dead Sea Salts.  Salts are high in minerals  and magnesium which are easily assimilated through the skin. The apple cider vinegar helps the body to become more alkaline  and the detox bath soak can help re-establish the balance.

Key points to remember with your detox bath regimen:  
  • Make sure to dry brush your skin with a vegetable fiber brush in an upwards direction towards your heart so you can maximize the effects of your bath.
  • Keep water beside you in the tub and drink tons while you soak.
  • Don’t fill the tub with water that is too unbearably hot to soak in.
  • Be careful entering and exiting the tub as it may become slippery.
  • Shower after your bath soak with cool water for a brief moment.
  • Get a good night’s rest after your bath.
  • Find ways to de-stress! Laugh and develop a healthy sense of humor!
  • Develop a personal spiritual practice
  • Engage in loving healthy relationships with others, animals and nature (yes I mean outdoors!)

 While apple cider vinegar can play an important role in detoxification, it will be far more effective when combined with a healthy lifestyle that includes these habits:

  • Eat a balanced diet that avoiding/eliminating animal products and instead eating unprocessed, natural foods that will provide the body with the nutrition it needs to purify itself.  Please note that excessive alcohol, sugar, processed food and/or caffeine can make your body overly acidic with slows and inhibits the body’s ability to support itself in self-healing.
  • Include some raw, uncooked foods in your diet since these supplies important enzymes that will help you detox and support alkalization of the body.
  • Choose organic foods as much as possible to help reduce your exposure to toxins. Keep in mind processed foods of all kinds should be avoided, even if they are labeled organic.
  • Exercise regularly to improve the health of the circulatory and lymphatic systems, both of which work to cleanse and purify the body.
  • Reduce toxin exposure by using natural household cleaners and beauty products.
  • Drink only filtered water to avoid potential toxin exposure. Getting plenty of pure water will also aid natural detoxification processes. Alkaline water great in particular or room temperature water with half the juice of an organic lemon.

Smoothie Recipe

Yes it is easy eating green with this powerful recipe that gives you that boost of nutrition. I love it in the morning to get my day started right. Pictured right is this yummy smoothie in my Urban Herbal Oasis --- my wellness kitchen!

Chia Seeds (Salvia hispanica) date back to the time of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations who ate it for energy and endurance. They are power packed with fiber and  Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids because we need them for our bodies to work normally. Because essential fatty acids are not made in the body we need to get them from our diet. (I love the Organic Chia Seeds (pictured above right) that I purchased from the Original Herbal Remedies Herbal Shop located in Jamaica, NY. You can get 9 oz for $11.95!)

Omega-3s have a been reported  to have a  number of health benefits:  reducing inflammation throughout the body -- in the blood vessels, the joints, and elsewhere, helping to  lower triglycerides and blood pressure supporting cardiovascular health and there are studies showing that omega-3 fatty acids may help with other conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, depression and many more ailments. These little seeds are powerful!

Enjoying food is part of enjoying life and I can’t imagine the pleasure of eating without the pleasure of chocolate. I love the color and the taste.  How about some chocolate syrup over some coconut sorbet on a hot summer day? What about some hot chocolate with some fresh cashew milk with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg on a cold or rainy day with a wonderful book?


Add some cocao to your life! Hundreds of studies have shown that raw dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants that promote heart health and may prevent many cardiovascular-related conditions.

Dark chocolate is made from cocoa beans removed from the pods of the cacao tree. They can also be ground into powder or made into cocoa liquor and made into cocoa butter.

During menstruation women crave chocolate because of the body’s need for higher magnesium. Magnesium is necessary for muscles and nerves to function and is involved especially in the metabolic process that converts food into energy.

Chocolate is love. Chocolate contains phenethylamine, which triggers the release of endorphins. This reaction is similar to the one that people experience when they fall in love. As a result, chocolate supports a happy mood. It is also very high in magnesium, which is one of the most abundant minerals in the body, with more than 50% located in the skeleton.

So go out get some chocolate love!

DANDELION

                                        Power to the weeds! There is no herb more resilient and beneficial to the human than the dandelion. Its happy sunny flowers grow virtually on every lawn waiting to serve us. The whole dandelion is edible and should be eaten as a tonic food.



Dandelions are a wonderful support for the liver, blood, kidneys, bladder, spleen, pancreas, stomach and intestines. It is recommended for stressed-out, internally sluggish and sedentary people. Anyone who is battling excessive fat, white flour, and concentrated sweeteners could benefit from a daily cup of dandelion tea or fresh dandelion salad.

The leaves are nutrition packed and I used it with great resolve as part of a wholistic regime to support my nutrition in conjunction with its cousin and my great supporter Nettle during a period of health crisis ...and I made it through!

Dandelions are higher in beta-carotene than carrots. The iron and calcium content is phenomenal, greater than spinach. It is high in protein and you also get vitamins B-1, B-2, B-5, B-6, B-12, C, E, P, and D, biotin, inositol, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and zinc from this superstar plant.

The dandelion root contains the sugar inulin, which doesn't produce the rapid production of insulin, as refined sugars do. So it comes typically to the aide of those with mature-onset diabetes and supports those with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It is a great great blood purifier also balancing the water balance in the body to keep it at healthy levels.

Dandelion leaf tea infusion also good at dinner time. Its bitter elements encourage the production of proper levels of hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes.  Even after the plant gets bitter after a strong infusion, it never becomes intolerable and is rich in vitamins and minerals that rush to the aid of people who are run-down. After a while the body craves the bitter as it is one of the tastes that the senses need for balance.

So again, say it loud and proud “Power to the Weeds!”
